Xbox Series S - World Premiere Reveal Trailer

Microsoft confirmed the digital-only console following weeks of rumors and less than a day after a trailer was leaked. The trailer revealed the launch date and other rumors, including the $300 price, which was later confirmed.

Some big Xbox games might finally get release dates at Gamescom
A masked figure in Avowed. The mask looks like it's made of gold, it has glowing red eyes, and there's a hood over its head.

Xbox is taking the stage at Gamescom later this month, bringing three big presentations for Avowed, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Starfield: Shattered Space. These are all games set to come out in 2024, but none have release dates or have been fully revealed to the public.

While we got the most in-depth look MachineGames' upcoming Indiana Jones title and its gameplay during the company's summer showcase, we don't have a release date or any information about the larger story, besides that it takes place chronologically between Raiders of the Lost Arc and The Last Crusade, involves Nazis, and features a mysterious artifact (so, not too different from a typical Indiana Jones story). Xbox’s new transparent controller will take you back to the 2000s
A blue translucent Xbox controller in front of a cyber blue background.

I miss translucent tech products as a industrywide trend, and it seems a lot of other people do too. Case in point is the new Sky Cipher Special Edition controller Xbox announced on Wednesday.

The transparent blue Xbox Wireless Controller, which will go on sale for $70 on August 13 and is now available for preorder, can show off inner workings like, as Xbox says, the rumble pack. It also has metallic D-pad and triggers that should be more durable than plastic, rubber grips on the back, and "silver interior parts" that make it look simultaneously futuristic and nostalgic.

Xbox console sales are down as services take over
The Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S getting splashed with water.

While Xbox continues to grow its software and content business thanks to the Activision Blizzard acquisition, the hardware side isn't doing quite as well. That's according to Microsoft's fourth-quarter financial report released Tuesday, which revealed that Xbox's hardware revenue dropped by 42% compared to this time last year. It didn't reveal exact numbers, but hardware was down 13% in its fourth-quarter 2023 financials compared to the previous year.

Hardware's downward trend isn't as big a deal when the company has been all in on expanding its other services, like Xbox Game Pass and Cloud Gaming. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella highlighted in the earnings call that Xbox's expansion to other platforms like Amazon TV is a part of the strategy to "expand from there so that we have content for everywhere people play games, starting with the PC." In general, revenue from content and services increased by 61%, boosted by the Activision Blizzard acquisition.
