Panerai at Watches and Wonders 2025: The New Panerai Luminor Marina

The most luminescent Luminor Marina you ever did see.

Hands down the single most iconic Panerai model, the Luminor Marina was the watch that endeared the brand to watch collectors all over the world. Since its introduction in 1993 alongside the Luminor and Mare Nostrum, Luminor Marina has always been known for two important things. Waterproofness and legibility, wherein Luminor represents the latter and Marina, the former. In essence, these were the two fundamental values driving the Panerai Watches and Wonders 2025 novelties.

Yet to the untrained eye, Panerai’s latest Luminor Marina no different from all the other Luminor Marinas that have come before. Which is understandable because the manufacture made it a point to hold firm to its core aesthetic. An astute decision, if we may add, since people who love Panerai cherish its distinctive design above all. Over the years, leaders of this beautiful brand have learned that Panerai aficionados will appreciate a light hand where design evolution is concerned, and no more.

Unless said evolution also brings performance-related improvements. In which case, it’s pretty much dealer’s choice.

With the Panerai Watches and Wonders 2025 novelties, the manufacture manages to introduce key technical upgrades without altering anything about the Luminor Marina. In total, the manufacture releases four variations of Luminor Marina in steel and one in titanium. Here are all the new and improved features in the latest Luminor Marina collection.

Enhanced Grade X2 SuperLumiNova

Legibility is a major cornerstone of Panerai watchmaking. Apart from oversized numerals and hands, luminosity is another key attribute in all Panerai watches. Matter of fact, Luminor takes its name from the luminous compound the manufacture had created during the early 1960s. While that has given way to the photoluminescent pigment LumiNova since 1998, the Luminor name remains. And so has Panerai’s dedication to improvements in dial legibility. When Swiss company RC Tritec introduced SuperLumiNova, Panerai naturally transitioned to this later material sometime during the 2000s.

This material is typically offered in three grades: standard, A and X1. During this point, the latter was known as highest performing grade with longest afterglow time and up to 60% brighter than standard grade after two hours. According to ISO 3157, the legibility is extended by a factor of 1.6. For this reason, SuperLumiNova X1 is the industry standard among fine watchmaking brands.

SuperLumiNova X2

Since 2024, Tritec has released the SuperLumiNova X2. Free of any radioactivity this new and improved version debuted in the Panerai Submersible GMT Luna Rossa Titanio PAM01507. According to the manufacture, SuperLumiNova X2 glows with increased brightness, up to 40% brighter than X1. Knowing how important legibility is to Panerai, one can see how it is imperative for the manufacture to stay consistently abreast of the latest advancements in luminescence.

After last year’s fleet of limited edition Submersibles, SuperLumiNova X2 makes its way into the Panerai core collection. Luminor Marina now features enhanced luminescence ensuring it is easily readable even in low-light conditions. The sandwich dial construction also does wonders to sharpen the appearance of the numerals as they glow fiercely in the dark.

500 Meters Extra Deep Diving

Luminosity is only one side of the Luminor Marina. The other is all about waterproofness and hence, deep diving. Its signature patented crown guard was invented precisely to provide top-notch timekeeping performance while underwater.

This is certainly one of the best loved features of the Luminor Marina. Its unique construct and utilitarian design stems from Panerai’s long and storied history as official suppliers to the Royal Italian Navy. The Marina Militare series reinforce this beautiful chapter in Panerai history, distinguished from the Luminor Marina which were originally designed for civilians.

Paired with a polished bezel and an olive-green sun-brushed dial, PAM03325 comes with a dark green scamosciato calf strap and a second dark green rubber strap

Yet this doesn’t mean Panerai has ever gone easy on the Luminor Marina. Not this year at least. The new Luminor Marina series are all water resistant to 500 meters, the deepest ever that this collection has ever been. Each watch was put through rigorous testing at a pressure 25% greater than the guaranteed water resistance value to ensure it meets Panerai’s stringent standards.

That said, these are not ISO certified dive watches as there is no helium release valve on the cases. But hey, it’s not like you were ever going to take it diving 500 meters below sea level anyway.

New Calibre P.980

One of the key differences of contemporary Panerai watches and those of the Pre-Vendome era is certainly related to the movement. Ever since the brand was managed by the Richemont group, movement development has become a top priority. Its location in Neuchatel, placed among the best movement suppliers and specialists in Switzerland, allows Panerai to grow steadily as a watchmaking brand.

To date, it has a robust collection of self-winding and manually-wound movements built and tested to the rigors of modern fine watchmaking.

That ambition continues for the manufacture this year as Panerai Watches and Wonders 2025 novelties unveil a new movement, Calibre P.980. Powering the latest Luminor Marina watches, Calibre P.980 is a variation of the existing Calibre P.900 movement.

Calibre P.980

P.980 underwent six-position testing to ensure reliable chronometric performance. Its construction includes new finishing for an essential design visible through an open sapphire case-back

At 4.2mm in height it is among the manufacture’s slimmest full-rotor automatic movements. Its 12 ½ lignes diameter sits nicely in almost all Luminor models from the Due to the Quaranta to the QuarantaQuattro. In the new 44mm Luminor Marina models, Panerai was able to reduce overall thickness by 12%, altogether yielding a 15% lighter case.

Despite having just one barrel it provides an ample three-day power reserve and can be seen through a sapphire case back.

PAM Click Release System and V-Shaped Bracelet

Panerai has further streamlined the lugs of the Luminor Marina and for one very good reason. To accommodate the brand’s proprietary PAM Click Release System. It is the first time this modern feature has been offered in the Luminor Marina line. Obviously this makes toggling between strap options an absolute breeze. Even the buckle can be quickly and easily released. All models except PAM03323 which is worn on bracelet will be delivered with two straps, one in alligator leather and the other in rubber.

The bracelet is paired with a light blue sun-brushed dial, a first-ever colorway for Panerai

But fret not if the PAM03323 and its riveting light blue sun-brushed dial was the one that caught your eye. Panerai has also crafted something new for this piece and that is a V-shaped bracelet which promises a more comfortable fit to the wrist. Its unique design inspired by the Luminor crown guard now includes the Quick Length Adjustment feature. This allows the bracelet to extend by 2mm on each side of the buckle so the buckle never sits askew. Finally, this bracelet is also equipped with the PAM Click Release System, allowing you to consider strap options as well.
